3M evaluating options for PFAS manufacturing in Belgium

On September 25th, 3M announced its intention to expedite the halt in the production of PFAS chemicals at its Zwijndrecht facility in Belgium. The company also cautioned about a potential adverse effect resulting from the ongoing suspension of operations at the plant.

PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” because they are known for their resistance to breaking down over time. These chemicals are utilized in a wide range of products, including firefighting foam and non-stick cookware, but they have raised concerns due to their associations with cancer and hormonal disruptions.

In August, 3M received preliminary approval for a $10.3 billion agreement to settle claims made by U.S. public water providers regarding PFAS pollution.

While non-PFAS production continues at the Belgian facility, the production of PFAS has been halted. This suspension, as well as any future developments related to it, could potentially have a “significant adverse impact” on the normal operations of 3M Belgium and the businesses reliant on the facility, as stated by the company.

Nevertheless, 3M expressed its inability to predict the exact extent of the negative impact on its operations. The company has already outlined plans to cease all PFAS manufacturing by the end of 2025.
